47: Don’t be a sexist, he or she

- Tips For Blogging

Some people fall prey to turning sexists while writing a blog post. They either assume everyone is either male, while others assume everyone is a female. Take a look at these:
“If a stranger walks up to you in the church to demand for your phone number, what would you tell him?”
If that’s the case, then the sentence should read:
“If a strange man walks up to you in the church to demand for your phone number, what would you tell him?”
And if you didn’t want to talk about a specific gender, then try:
“If a stranger walks up to you in the church to demand for your phone number, what would you tell him or her?”
Avoid using “he” alone or “she” alone where you aren’t actually referring to a specific gender. Instead use “she” or “he” or “s/he”.
And never assume every engineer is a man or every nurse a woman.
